July 21 - 25, 2025 |$1,175
In this one-night-and-four-days workshop we will be playing with different sized Drunkard’s Path blocks, color grading and wedges to create an optical illusion quilt. Jenny Haynes will guide you through the many possibilities while encouraging individuality and creativity. The class is based on her latest design, the Fokus quilt, that emerged from two of her previous works, the Hexibore quilt (#hexiborequilt) and the Tumbling Reels quilt (#tumblingreelsquilt).
Learning Objectives
Amongst the many techniques and skills covered in this class are: ● No-Pin Curves● Seam Matching● Pressing● Color work● Construction● Quilt Design
Jenny will show you how to transform the design by altering the colors, using different sized curves and changing the degrees on the wedges to create eight, six or four-wedge quilts.
To get all participants workshop ready, Jenny will hold a two-hour prep class on zoom a couple of months prior to the in-person workshop. This will enable you to get your head around what we will do in class as well as get your fabric and tools ready. In the prep class, Jenny will talk you through the Fokus design and pattern, templates and pre-cutting, as well as suggesting different ways to pick colors with the help of tools like drawing programs and color apps.
Individuality is highly encouraged and Jenny will show you multiple ways of making the design yours using the three patterns included as your starting point. Jenny will be using TouchDraw, a vector 2D drawing and diagramming application, to demonstrate how to add curved blocks to wedges and how to get the gradation to enhance the optical illusion.
* For those of you interested in using this technique and design as a spring board for your own designs and to make bigger changes to the original, a one-on-one with Jenny can be booked at an additional cost. More info on the one-on-one will be shared in the Prep Session on April 22nd.
What's Included In Workshop
● PDF paper templates● The Fokus quilt pdf patterns (three different versions)● A recording of the Prep Session
Level
The class is targeted to the experienced quilter (and quilt designer) who would like to develop their craftsmanship further. Adventurous and brave beginners should also feel encouraged to attend. No previous curve experience is required, but general quilting knowledge is assumed (how to use a rotary cutter, sew with an accurate seam allowance etc.) and an affection for precision will surely help.
What's Included In Retreat
Enjoy Jenny's lecture on "The Evolution of a Curve" and a meet-and-greet with hors d’oeuvres on Monday night, July 21st at 5:30 pm prior to the class start.
The instruction is four full days Tuesday through Friday. The retreat includes two lunches and two dinners.

Prep Session April 22, 2025
There will be a prep session via zoom on April 22nd, 2025, from 11am-1pm MDT (6pm-8pm BST).
In this two-hour online session, we will go through the design and pattern, templates and what pre-cutting you can do in preparation for the workshop.
We will also talk about how to choose fabric and colors that accentuate the optical illusion by using tools like drawing programs and color apps as well as colored pencils. There is a design element included for those who’d be up for changing the pattern. Information about the additional and optional one-on-one design class will be shared in this session too.
Click on the Night 1 or Day 1 - 4 to see each day's activities.
Pre-Workshop Meet & Greet
Jenny will lecture on "The Evolution of a Curve" during a pre-class meet-and-greet with hors d’oeuvres on Monday night, July 21st at 5:30 pm .
Getting Started
We will recap what we talked about in the prep class before going through everyone’s designs and planning the approach and what additional curves and backgrounds need to be cut. Jenny will demonstrate sewing and pressing the no-pin curves in many different sizes, while ensuring accurate seam allowances and precise curves in preparation for day two. The aim is to get the first panel done and to do any color tweaks that might be needed before the rest of the panels are made on day 2 and cut into wedges on day 3.
Colors & Foundations
Any adjustments to the colors are made before we continue to sew the curves and panels. The size and shape of the quilt is finalized. The background triangles and borders are added. The panels are marked in preparation for cutting.
Cutting Wedges & Troubleshooting
The panels are cut into wedges and joined together. Demonstration of precision piecing and seam matching when joining the wedges together. Trouble shooting - getting everyone’s quilts progressed while making sure you know how to correct errors if you choose to and that any difficulties are overcome.
Final Assembly
Continue to join the wedges. The focus is on flat seams and smooth joints. We will have a chat about quilting before finishing off with a group photo of all your stunning makes!
