Guardians appear in many mythologies, including Greek, Roman, and folklore. Throughout these mythic histories, guardians appeared in many forms—gnomes, leprechauns, dragons, angels, and more. They act as counselors, advisers and protectors to humans. Modern culture continues to embrace the idea of guardians as the enduring popularity of Marvel’s superheroes can attest to.
In this five-day quilting retreat, you will imagine and bring your guardian to life in a quilt. First you will ask yourself, “What does my guardian look like? Is it a superhero, angel, kachina doll, or totem pole?” You will take your guardian concept and turn it into a 3’ x 7’ quilt.
Your guardian concept can begin from a photograph, drawing, or it can just live in your imagination. You will choose your color palette and fabric based on this concept. For example, if you are thinking superhero, primary colors might be appropriate. An angel might mean bringing whites and pastel fabrics. A totem could require earth toned fabrics. Bring an array of values (lights, mediums, and darks) of each color in your palette. Also, consider what type of background might be appropriate for your guardian and bring those fabrics as well.
The instruction is five full days Monday through Friday. It includes three lunches and two dinners. There is a lecture and meet and greet on the Sunday night prior to the class start.
The Process
Beginning with large black shapes (head, torso, limbs) we will create the silhouette of your guardian figure and then add color and details to the figure and the background as we create this magnificent, larger-than-life figure in fabric. After laying out the design on a design wall, we will sew them together into a quilt top. Complete “dressing” your design with any embellishments you desire, such as beads, ribbons, sequins.
